Georgian Mahogany Veneered Drum Table with later Carved Tripod Base & Single Drawer
A lovely Geo. III-IV 'drum' table top with beautifully figured mahogany veneer, slightly faded in colour and with shrinkage gaps but stable and cross-banded edging, over a veneered frieze with four drawer fronts, cock-beaded and set with circular drop-handles & decorative plates, of which three drawer fronts are dummies but the fourth belongs to a full-depth drawer, the drum resting on a bearer that is supported by a column, boldly carved with acanthus leaves, as are the 'knees' of the cabriole shaped tripod legs, this quirky piece is a 'marriage of convenience' but, both attractive & generously practical, it will charm in the most elegantly-furnished of homes, fully-deserving of the admiring attention it will surely attract.
Dia. of Top 59cm (23.25") & Height 66cm (26")
This is a marriage of a Georgian top from around 1810-30 and a Victorian base, so you may expect the mature character & patina that only develops with considerable age, together with losses to the veneer* & the cock-beading to one of the dummy drawer fronts but, otherwise, it's in perfectly acceptable if slightly shabby 'country house' condition, ready to use in your home.
*There are some losses & replacements to the veneer, specifically below the drawer fronts and a ragged lower edge in places too.
Glossary: Drum or capstan tables were used on large estates during the 18th & early 19th centuries, for the collection of rents from the tenants. They usually have four or seven drawers for quarterly or weekday payments and, where the number of drawers does not correspond with any particular regular time interval, they may be monogrammed to identify the tenants. The design was also used for library or writing tables. The description ‘rent’ table was not contemporary but has come to be applied to any table of the type.
